What C2 means
On Monogram ZGP professional gas ranges, including the ZGP484NG, C2 means the oven control cannot communicate with the upper temperature encoder. That encoder reads the position of the upper oven's temperature knob and passes it to the control. When the link is gone, the control cannot learn the temperature you set. The control stores C2 along with other recent codes, and we read them from a technician test menu during a visit.
Common causes of C2
- Harness to the upper temperature encoder
- Encoder connector not seated
- Encoder not answering the control
- Control communication input
1. Set the oven controls to off and let the range rest. 2. Turn the upper temperature knob through its range gently, then set it to off. 3. Try one bake to see whether the code returns. 4. If C2 appears again, stop and call us.
- The knob itself may feel normal while the encoder behind it fails to report
- We check the wiring to the encoder before replacing it
- The control stays on the list only after wiring and encoder pass

What is an encoder?
It is a small sensing part behind a knob that turns the knob position into a signal. C2 means the signal from the upper temperature knob is not reaching the control.
Can I set the temperature another way?
Not reliably. If the control cannot hear the knob, it may ignore the setting. Please do not force the knob, because that can damage the part further.
Does this affect the lower oven?
The lower oven has its own encoders, reported as C5 and C6. C2 is about the upper temperature knob, though a shared harness can sometimes affect both.
Still seeing C2?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
